Waycross Rotary Presents “Service above Self” Award to Peggy Justice

Ed Avra (left), Scholarship Director of the Waycross Rotary Club, presented OTC Adult Education instructor Peggy Justice with the 2007 Rotary Club “Service above Self” award for Okefenokee Technical College. This award is reserved for post-secondary faculty and staff who exhibit a dedication to their calling that exceeds the normal bounds of duties and responsibilities.

Justice’s faithful service to OTC and adult literacy began in July 1997. To date, she has helped over 462 students earn their GED certificate. As the Brantley County Adult Education instructor, Justice tirelessly and passionately maintains a full time plus schedule, which has earned her the distinction of having the highest graduation rate in the OTC service area, and one of the highest in the state. Peggy Justice Receives Award from Ed Avra

Mrs. Justice recently returned to full time duty following hip replacement surgery.  This operation may have slowed her down physically, but it did not diminish the passion and expectations she has for her students. During her “time off” for recovery, Mrs. Peggy, as she is affectionately known, maintained contact with “her” program through daily telephone conversations with her substitute and periodic calls to Pete Mills, the Executive Director of Adult Education.

“The Adult Education program of Okefenokee Technical College is better and stronger because of Peggy Justice,” stated Avra, who read excerpts from her nomination narratives. “She has changed the lives of countless people because of her selfless service to literacy and education.”

When presented her award, Mrs. Justice thanked club members and shared with them her love for teaching and her motivation for working in education almost 51 years.”
