Dr. Jewell Sweat is Published

Mr. Furman with studentsDr. Jewell Sweat, Radiologic Technology instructor at Okefenokee Technical College, recently received the good news that a portion of her doctoral dissertation, “Tech Prep’s Affect on Graduation,” was selected for publication in Techniques, a professional magazine in the field of career and technical education with a paid circulation of 38,000.

Additionally, Dr. Sweat’s work will be indexed in the Academic Index, Business Education Index, journals in Education, Chicano Index, and Education Index.

Dr. Mark Fenster, associate professor in the Department of Educational Leadership at Valdosta State University, said, “It was an excellent and noteworthy place to disseminate a set of results on the effectiveness of the Tech Prep initiative.”

Briefly, Dr. Sweat found that one component of Georgia’s Tech Prep initiative worked in the intended manner as students involved in Tech Prep graduated sooner than those not involved with the initiative. She found no support of any of the academic claims made in support of Tech Prep, claims like students enter technical colleges better prepared and perform better in coursework than their non-Tech Prep peers.

Her work was submitted for publication after she had presented her dissertation at the American Educational Research Association in 2005.

Dr. Sweat earned her Doctor of Education from Valdosta State University.  She also holds a Bachelor of Science in Education and a Master of Education from VSU.  She is also a graduate of Memorial Hospital School of X-Ray Technology in Waycross.

Dr. Sweat began her career at OTC in 1989. Prior to that time she was employed at Radiology Services, PA.

Dr. Sweat is a member of the Association for Career and Technical Education, Georgia Association for Career and Technical Education, American Society of Radiologic Technologists, the Georgia Educator’s Association of Radiation and Medical Imaging, and the Georgia Society of Radiologic Technologists.  She serves as Chair of the SE Consortium Radiology programs, and she is on the Valdosta State University Adult and Career Education Advisory Committee. She has also been a site visitor for the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology.

Jewell is married to Dr. Jim Sweat, Director of Vocational Education for the Ware County School System. Their children are Carole LeVar, Christi Greene, Josh Sweat, and Tami Sweat. The Sweats have two grandchildren and are members of Central Baptist Church.
