Strickland Takes Top Honor in State SkillsUSA Event

Okefenokee Technical College SkillsUSA is pleased to announce that Selena Strickland, an Automotive Collision Repair student and the 2007 college GOAL winner, won 1st  place (Gold) in the Collision Repair Technology competition held at Central Georgia Technical College in Macon, Georgia.

Strickland will go on to compete in the Nationals SkillsUSA competition in Kansas City June 25-30, 2007.Faye Mathis and Selena Strickland

Participants in the Collision Repair Technology contest were judged on each of the following skill areas: metal finishing, plastic repair, painting, welding, estimating, frame measuring, and interview.

In addition to her gold metal, Strickland also brought home a torque wrench from Snap-On, a toolbox donated by Craftsman, and a $75 gift certificate from Lowe’s.

Formerly known as VICA (Vocational Industrial Clubs of America), SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers, and industry working together to ensure America has a skilled workforce. Locally, Faye Mathis and Sally Smith are the SkillsUSA advisors. According to Strickland, Ms. Mathis and Mrs. Smith are wonderful!

Strickland is also most grateful to her auto collision instructors, Mr. Jack Dixon and Mr. Terry Simmons, and her husband and family for their support.
