SRMC Auxiliary Establishes Endowment Fund at OTC

The Satilla Regional Medical Center (SRCM) Auxiliary recently established the SRMC Auxiliary Presidents Scholarship Fund with the Okefenokee Technical College Foundation to provide scholarships to students in healthcare programs at OTC.

Two $1,000 scholarships will be awarded to deserving students enrolled in a healthcare program at OTC in 2009, while the remaining contribution will be invested and generate earnings to fund additional healthcare scholarships. The auxiliary’s mission, according to Stephanie Smith, SRMC Director of Volunteers, is to ensure quality healthcare workers for the future. SRMC Donation

“What a tremendous gift to the college and our students,” stated Thaxton. “This gesture of generosity and educational support will impact the community for years to come.”

The idea for the scholarship fund came as the organization’s members planned their annual banquet. Traditionally, the auxiliary gifts the outgoing president with a token of appreciation. Because of Auxiliary President Rex Abbott’s (2006-2008) dedication to Okefenokee Technical College, auxiliary members decided to honor him – as well as all past and future presidents of the auxiliary – with an Auxiliary Presidents Scholarship Fund.

According to Cindy Tanner, Executive Director of the OTC Foundation, the names of past presidents of the SRMC Auxiliary can be viewed on OTC’s Website: About OTC_OTC Foundation_Scholarships_SRMC Auxiliary Presidents Scholarship.

“I don’t think you could have done anything better for me,” stated Abbott. “It feels good to give to an organization that is going to, in turn, give to others.”

Abbott retired from OTC in 2002, after 38 years with the college. Before the doors of Waycross-Ware Tech (now OTC) opened in 1965, Abbott was teaching vocational classes at the local high school when the college’s governance fell to the local school board. Abbott worked in several different positions at Okefenokee Tech and, at times, wore “lots of hats.” In addition to other jobs/positions, he was employed as an instructor, a recruiter, the Special Populations Coordinator, and the Facilities Maintenance Supervisor.

The Auxiliary supports SRMC and the community by providing hospital equipment, patient services, and various scholarships, including the Auxiliary Presidents Scholarship, from proceeds of the Gift Shop and annual fundraisers, such as book, jewelry and clothing sales and the Love Light Holiday Tree.

The hospital Gift Shop is open from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Monday through Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Saturday and closed on Sunday. The Gift Shop has gift items, candy, snacks, balloons and many other interesting items.
