SRMC Auxiliary Gives To OTC Foundation For Scholarships

Cheryl Crosby (right), president of the Satilla Regional Medical Center (SRCM) Auxiliary, makes a significant contribution, on behalf of the organization, to the Okefenokee Technical College (OTC) Foundation for student scholarships. OTC President, Dr. Gail Thaxton, accepted the gift on behalf of the Foundation Board.  Larry Paulk is Foundation Chair.

The Auxiliary established the SRMC Presidents Scholarship Fund with the Foundation in 2008 to assist OTC students pursuing a career in healthcare with tuition and program-related expenses.

The auxiliary’s mission, according to Stephanie Smith, SRMC Director of Volunteers, is to ensure quality healthcare workers for the future.

“We sincerely appreciate Satilla Auxiliary volunteers and everything they do for the community,” stated Dr. Thaxton. “This gift comes at a good time, when students need it most. The funds will assist healthcare students in realizing their career goals.”

The idea for the scholarship fund came as the organization’s members planned their 2008 annual banquet. Traditionally, the auxiliary gifts the outgoing president with a token of appreciation. Because of Auxiliary President Rex Abbott’s (2006-2008) dedication to Okefenokee Technical College, auxiliary members decided to honor him – as well as all past and future presidents of the auxiliary – with an Auxiliary Presidents Scholarship Fund. Abbott retired from OTC in 2002, after 38 years of employment there.

According to Cindy Tanner, Executive Director of the OTC Foundation, the names of past presidents of the SRMC Auxiliary can be viewed on OTC’s Web site: About OTC :: OTC Foundation :: Scholarships :: former presidents of the auxiliary.

The Auxiliary supports SRMC and the community by providing hospital equipment, patient services, and various scholarships, including the Auxiliary Presidents Scholarship, from proceeds of the Gift Shop and annual fundraisers, such as book, jewelry and clothing sales and the Love Light Holiday Tree.
