Rotary Awards Service above Self

Ed Avra (left), Scholarship Director of the Rotary Club, presented Lisa Howell and Sally Smith (right) with the 2006 Rotary Club “Service above Self” awards. This award is reserved for post-secondary faculty and staff who exhibit a dedication to their calling that exceeds the normal bounds of duties and responsibilities.

Mrs. Sally Smith is the Surgical Technology instructor as Okefenokee Technical College, where she has taught for 15 years. She has served as the SkillsUSA advisor since 1993, and has also been an advisor for various other clubs over the years. She presently serves as the OTC Faculty Representative on the Board of Directors and holds a membership in several professional organizations. She is always eager to extend a helping hand in fund-raisers and any other college function. When presented the award, Mrs. Smith said that her students are really the reason that she goes to work each morning.

Mrs. Lisa Howell is an assistant professor of mathematics at Waycross College. She holds a Master’s Degree in Mathematics from Georgia Southern University. She is a member of several professional organizations, including the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and the Mathematical Association of America. For the past 8 years, she has taught mathematics at Waycross College, and she has been actively involved in college activities and clubs and in community/civic clubs.

When presented her award, Mrs. Howell said that she was honored to receive the award because many others were deserving. She also indicated how much she enjoys teaching. “I have always said that you should love what you do. Well, I really love teaching.”
