OTC Student John Murray is Recipient of Lewis Family Scholarship

Scholarship Is Awarded in Memory of Grady Lewis

Lewis and Raulerson, Inc. and the Lewis family recently established a scholarship at Okefenokee Technical College in memory of Mr. Grady Carl Lewis of Hoboken. Mr. Lewis, the son of Carl Howard and Bernice Stuckey Lewis, was 49 when he died from melanoma in 2012.

Mr. John Murray of Waycross was selected as the first recipient of the award, which was named the Lewis Family Scholarship. Murray is a 2012 graduate of Ware County High School and an OTC forestry student who was recommended for the honor by his instructor, Tommy Peagler. Murray was selected from among a number of qualified applications by the OTC Foundation Scholarship Selection Committee and representatives from Lewis and Raulerson, Inc. and the Lewis family. Murray will use the scholarship money for tuition, fees, and program supplies, such as forestry boots, snake chaps, and a clinometer.

Murray plans to earn his associate degree at OTC and then either continue his education at a four-year college/university or “head straight into the workforce and get experience.” He is in his third semester of the forestry program.

Anna Lewis (left), Grady’s sister, visited Okefenokee Technical College to tour the Forest Technology program and meet Murray. She and Murray discussed Murray’s career plans and past educational experiences. Ms. Lewis said her brother would have been pleased with the scholarship and would have approved of Murray as the first representative of the newly-established award.

Murray presented Ms. Lewis with a note of appreciation, thanked Lewis and Raulerson and the Lewis family for the scholarship, and expressed how honored he is to be selected. OTC Foundation Executive Director Cindy Tanner also thanked Lewis and Raulerson and the Lewis family. “This is such a generous and meaningful way to pay tribute to Mr. Lewis,” stated Tanner. “The Foundation and College are honored to be a part of this special acknowledgement that not only recognizes a special loved one, but also assists a future timber cruiser with his educational and career goals.”

Grady Carl Lewis graduated from the University of Georgia with a Bachelor of Science degree in forestry. He was part owner of Lewis Oil Company, Lewis and Raulerson, Inc., and Friendly Express, Inc. According to his family, one of Grady’s favorite pastimes was timber cruising with his father. Lewis was enrolled in the forest technology program at Okefenokee Technical College before entering UGA and always spoke highly of OTC and what he learned while in the program.
