OTC Students Participate in Heritage Gardens Work Day

Okefenokee Technical College students from the environmental horticulture program, forestry program, and horticulture club participated in a Heritage Community Garden work day Wednesday, May 29.

Contributing to the work project were Environmental Horticulture Instructor Mark Deal (L to R), Sarah Humphries, Letitia Alexander, Heather Hickerson, June Cottingham, Norris Tanner, Jim Bedner (back row), and OTC Forest Technology Instructor Tommy Peagler (not shown). The OTC Horticulture Club has partnered with others in support of the Heritage Community Garden since its inception in 2008.

Thanks to the Southeast Health District, a new sign was installed that better represents the purpose of the garden, which is to make the community aware of the benefits of fresh food and active living. Deal noted that gardening is both therapeutic and healthy.

The Heritage Community Garden is located on the corner of Blackshear Avenue and Riverside Drive in Waycross and is a collaborative project of the Satilla Health Foundation, Southeast Health District, OTC Horticulture Club, YMCA, and City of Waycross.
