Lena Lewis Receives Brooksie A. Pike Scholarship

Lena Lewis, a senior cosmetology student from Waycross, is the Fall 2010 Brooksie A. Pike Scholarship recipient for Okefenokee Technical College. “I took a few courses here at OTC some years ago,” stated Lewis in her scholarship application. “My instructors took a genuine interest in me and in my career goals. As a result, I enrolled at OTC again later in life, when my children were grown, to continue my education and training. I appreciate Mrs. Harkleroad and all of the staff who inspired me to complete my program.”

Ms. Lewis, who took marketing classes prior to enrolling in cosmetology, hopes to own her own business one day.

OTC President Gail Thaxton (left), OTC Foundation Director Cindy Tanner (right), and Cosmetology Instructor Ollie Harkleroad congratulated Lewis and presented her with the $300 award on behalf of the OTC Foundation trustees and the Pike family. Lewis expressed her gratitude to the Pike family and everyone who helped her succeed. She will use her award check toward expenses related to the cosmetology state board exam fees.

The Brooksie A. Pike Scholarship was established by Dr. and Mrs. John Pike and other family members to pay tribute to Mrs. Brooksie Pike, who had a forty-year career in cosmetology. To be eligible for the scholarship, applicants must be full-time cosmetology students in their final quarter at Okefenokee Technical College with a minimum grade point average of 3.0 and an excellent work ethic.

Two Brooksie A. Pike Scholarships are awarded each year to outstanding cosmetology students in their last term at Okefenokee Tech.
