OTC Students Selected for Bagwell Foundation Scholarship

Deidre Durance (left), Stacey Durance (right), and Cecilia Holton Waldron (not shown), all Bacon County residents, were recently selected to receive a Bagwell Family Foundation Scholarship from the Okefenokee Technical College Foundation. OTC Foundation Executive Director Cindy Tanner (center) congratulated recipients and wished them well in their pursuit of higher education and technical training. Both Deidre and Stacey are working toward a computer support specialist degree. They were both nominated for the 2011 Georgia Occupational Award of Leadership for OTC, and both have been repeatedly named to the President’s List. They are married and have three children: Starr, Khristian, and Rebekah. Deidre and Stacey plan to use the scholarship money to pay for their certification exams.

Cecilia is currently in the radiologic technology program. She, too, has been named to the President’s List. After graduating, Ms. Waldron plans to continue her education in radiology by specializing in sonography. She also plans to volunteer in the community and hopes to get a job at a VA or non-profit hospital.

All three Bagwell Family Foundation Scholarship recipients will receive a $500 monetary award made possible by Mr. and Mrs. Tommy Bagwell, Forsyth County business and civic leaders.

In 2005 Tommy and Chantal Bagwell established a $500,000 Bagwell Family Scholarship endowment fund to provide scholarships for students attending technical colleges located near their family business locations. Scholarship recipients are chosen using several criteria including academic success and proximity to the company’s operation sites.

As a stipulation of the scholarship, all of the recipients have pledged to give back to the college, over the course of their lifetime, an amount equal to what they received. OTC President Dr. Gail Thaxton, Foundation trustees, and the three most recent recipients would extend their gratitude to the Bagwells for their generosity.
