Program Description
Pipe SMAW (Shielded Metal Arc Welding) is a program that provides
the knowledge and skills for welding in today’s modern
manufacturing industry. The purpose of the program is to teach
good health and safety practices as well as to teach basic
mathematics skills, introductory welding knowledge, skills
in oxyfuel cutting, flat position, horizontal position, vertical
position, overhead position plate welding, pipe welding and
preparation for industrial qualification. Courses in the certificate
program will be taught simultaneously with the welding diploma
program.
Length of Program
Length of program varies with the student’s ability
to schedule classes.
Entrance Date
Students are accepted quarterly.
Entrance Requirements
Visual acuity test strongly recommended
Age
16 years of age or older
Education
High School Diploma or GED is not required.
Advisor
An advisor should be consulted prior to enrolling in any course.
A program advisor will be assigned by admissions.
Salary Range
$20,800 - $35,360 annually
Job Market
Welders perform welding (SMAW) on carbon steel plate and/or
pipe in all positions.
Tack welders make small welds to hold parts in place.
Welding operators operate machines and equipment.
Other jobs include fitters and inspectors.
Personal Traits Required
Important attributes for a welder are good eyesight, manual
dexterity, hand eye coordination, critical thinking skills,
problem solving, and the ability to apply technology to the
work requirement.
