Program Description
The Basic SMAW (Shielded Metal Arc Welding) technical certificate
of credit program teaches good health and safety practices
as well as introductory knowledge and skills in oxyfuel cutting
and shielded metal arc welding in both the flat and horizontal
position.
Length of Program
Length of program varies with the student’s ability
to schedule classes.
Entrance Date
Students are accepted quarterly.
Entrance Requirements
Visual acuity test strongly recommended
Age
16 years of age or older
Education
High School Diploma or GED is not required.
Advisor
An advisor should be consulted prior to enrolling in any course.
A program advisor will be assigned by admissions.
Salary Range
Salary Range $14,560 - $20,800 annually
Job Market
Welders perform welding (SMAW) limited to flat and horizontal
positions.
Tack welders make small welds to hold parts in place.
Welder’s helpers maintain shop and equipment.
Personal Traits Required
Important attributes for a welder are good eyesight, manual
dexterity, hand eye coordination, critical thinking skills,
problem solving, and the ability to apply technology to the
work requirement.
